Video: ‘Sparks of Quantum Physics: Perspectives Shaping the Future‘ by Miriam Joanna
The quantum innovation lab (Qilab) is a program designed for scientists who want to investigate the commercial potential of their research. Participants will learn from industry leaders, identify their technology’s potential, and explore funding opportunities to turn ideas into viable commercial projects, such as startups.
The qilab is organised by the University of Vienna together with leading research institutions and with the support of incubators and venture funds. This unique mix of stakeholders lays sound foundations to provide participants with tools and methods to identify, evaluate, and realise business ideas based on quantum technologies.
We invite motivated researchers at all stages of their careers, including Master and PhD students, postdocs, and PIs, to apply. This includes researchers from related fields such as engineering or computer science who have a connection to quantum technologies.
The Qilab includes a one-week bootcamp in Bad Ischl, a beautiful location far from the labs to reduce distractions for participants and increase creativity and engagement. Participants will learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and work together in teams on innovative ideas. Three weeks after the bootcamp, the programme culminates in a Demo Day, where selected teams pitch their projects.
The program is free for researchers from participating institutions (listed at the bottom of this page). If you are affiliated with another institution, participation may still be possible if you or your organisation cover the program fee.

REGISTRATIONS OPEN SOON!
The application period for this year's program is from 11 May to 14 June. After the deadline, all applications will be reviewed, and selected candidates may be invited for an interview. As places are limited, we will inform you whether we are able to offer you a spot once the selection process is complete.
The selection committee and partner institutions will shortlist the most successful candidates. Some candidates will be invited to an interview to assess their fit to the rest of the cohort. In the first week of July, shortlisted candidates will be contacted to confirm their participation. Once confirmed, registration fees will be paid by their host institutions.
The boot camp will take place from 31 August to 5 September in Bad Ischl, and it will cover key aspects of turning quantum research into market-ready technologies including technology identification, market analysis, exploring funding opportunities and pitch training.
Get ready for a mix of hands-on workshops, group activities, focus sessions and hiking.
If selected among the finalists, you will showcase your business idea and get feedback from industry experts.
The pitch session will be followed by a networking session where all participants will have the opportunity to talk to different stakeholders of the quantum industry.
The Demo Day will take place at the Sky Lounge of the University of Vienna on 25 September 2026.
